I’ve been thinking a lot lately about why some blogs and websites really take off while others just languish for a few years until the owner gives up. There has to be a reason some people are able to make a success of marketing their site while others fail, here are a few of my ideas.

First I think you have to define what kind of success you really want because for some bloggers the only definition of success is how much money the site makes. While other people only care about how many readers/visitors they get each month. Remember that lots of visitors to your site does not automatically equal lots of money.

People still seem to think all you have to do is build a site and people will come, but it’s never been true. You need to decide where your traffic is going to come from, is it SEO, Social media, PPC or other similar blogs. The thing is if you don’t understand these mediums are you going to dedicate the time to learning them, and if not that do you have the money to pay someone else to do it?

It’s a myth that you have to be really different on the internet in other to stand out or have any chance of earning money online. However remember Google wasn’t the first search engine and Amazon was not the first online store, they just did it better than everyone before them. There’s a huge market for people who can improve on existing ideas, can you see the mistakes other companies are making?

The last piece of advice I have may seem quite boring but the truth is you need perseverance above all other things in order to create success. Nothing happens overnight especially when you’re the new guy so be prepared for some long nights and weekends before you see any money.
